According to the most recent Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll, by a 2 to 1 margin (57% to 29%) likely voters in New Jersey claim they are following the race for governor more closely than major league baseball.  “This is encouraging news for both civics teachers and candidates,” said Peter Woolley who teaches government and politics at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  Only 13% of likely voters say they are following both about the same or neither one more than the other.

More men than women (39% to 22%) say they're following baseball more closely than the governor's race.  However, married women report following baseball more closely than unmarried women by a 26% to 16% margin.  Likely Republican voters are slightly more likely than likely than Democrats or independents (34% to 29% to 26%) to report following major league baseball more closely than the governor's race.

The Garden State's likely voters also say that which candidate for governor is elected makes a difference. Nearly 2 out of 3 likely voters (63%) this year say who is elected makes “quite a lot” or “some” difference, while only 14% say it makes no difference who is elected.  “The state has had a rough year and voters could just give way to their cynicism about politics and voting. So, I find these results heartening,” said Woolley.

“But with the election just three weeks away, and 29% of likely voters still following baseball more closely than the race for governor, one has to wonder who benefits more if the Yankees are eliminated tonight: Corzine or Forrester?” added Woolley.

The PublicMind poll of 602 likely voters statewide was conducted by telephone from October 4 through October 9 and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
