A majority of New Jersey voters (55%) recognize the new mayor of the state's largest city, Cory Booker. And according the most recent results from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind, they like what they see.

Almost two-thirds (65%) of those who know Booker say they have a favorable opinion of Booker. Only 3% say they have an unfavorable view. About a third are undecided.

Favorable views vary little across demographic groups: Democrats, Republicans, men, women, conservatives, liberals, black and white.

“The favorable impression Booker has made is remarkable in this suburban state whose voters largely distain the cities,” observed Peter Woolley, the poll director.

“These numbers are remarkable for any politician and are groundbreaking for an African-American,” said Rick Thigpen, a former executive director of the New Jersey Democratic Party. “If he succeeds at improving Newark, Mayor Booker will be a formidable, maybe even unstoppable, candidate for statewide office.”

The PublicMind poll of 651 registered voters was conducted from August 21 through August 27 and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
