Republican Response

On the theory that “rising tides lift all ships,” it is time for Democrats in New Jersey to start rooting for George Bush.  It is true that Governor Corzine's numbers are, at the moment, a bit stronger than the President's.  By most standards, however, the Governor's numbers are only fair at best.  If, as expected, Governor Corzine proposes new taxes to address the State budget deficit, he can expect a rapid erosion of his numbers, especially with the public in such an ornery mood.  If, however, the overall political environment improves due to the strengthening economy and better news from Iraq, not only will George Bush's numbers move up but Governor Corzine could build a cushion for his austere budget proposals.
