Response by Stephen Salmore

New Jersey continues its Democratic tilt.  Ever since the election of Bill Clinton, New Jersey has tended to side with Democratic candidates in national politics. That trend continues.  Although George Bush did better in New Jersey in his re-election campaign than he did in 2000, the shift was not enough to move New Jersey back into the Republican column or even into the toss-up category. Although Republicans will continue to be competitive in state elections, because of the strongly conservative tilt of the national  Republicans, Presidential candidates will continue to struggle in our state.
