George Geist’s strong showing in the 4th district
reflects both his strong personal following and Democratic voters’ lack of enthusiasm
for Governor McGreevey. He has used his more than decade of service
in the legislature to achieve almost universal name recognition and
high favorability. Madden, although fairly well known because of his
own public service, cannot match Geist’s numbers. And in addition,
is hurt by the lack of enthusiasm for the Democratic governor and his
administration by Democratic voters in the district.
