Response by Stephen Salmore

Just as Doug Forrester, the Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate, benefited by "not being" Torricelli, Jim McGreevey has benefited by having voters unhappy with the direction of the state focus their discontent on the disgraced Torricelli. During the budget and policy debates this spring, McGreevey did not seem to be fully in control and questions about his competence were raised. Now, by appearing to have orchestrated Torricelli's departure from the Senate race, McGreevey has improved his standing with voters.
