Background Memo

The most recent poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind was conducted by telephone from November 2 through November 4, 2001 using a statewide, randomly selected sample of adults (age 18 and over) of whom a subset were likely voters. The likely voters participating in the weekend the survey (Nov 2, 3, and 4) numbered 441; the sampling error for the weekend component of the poll is +/- 4.5 percentage points at the 95 percent level of confidence. TMR, Inc. of Parsippany, NJ. conducts all PublicMind interviews. Professionally trained interviewers using a CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing system) conduct the interviews. Random selection is achieved through computerized random-digit dialing. This technique gives every person with a phone number (including those with unlisted numbers) an equal chance of being selected. Likely voters are screened through a series of questions. Results are also mathematically weighted to match known demographics. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling error. This kind of error, which cannot be measured, arises from a number of factors including, but not limited to, non-response (eligible individuals refusing to be interviewed), question wording, the order in which questions are asked, and variations among interviewers.
